Swallow Bakery is an all day cafe on a corner of Imperial Square. Handy for Festival Events.
The Longer Read Swallow Cafe is an established cafe in Cheltenham. It’s a large place (maybe 60-80 covers) and I’ve always wanted to like it more than I do. On previous visits I’ve found the staff bored/aloof, but on the other hand you have to respect a place where pretty much everything is made on site. And it’s a hardworking business too with a brunch menu from 8am to 3pm, soup of the day (today it’s cream of celeriac and fennel) and the usual afternoon cakes and pastries. Good to see that Swallow Bakery does a Kid’s Tea for a fiver: apple or cranberry juice or milk, sandwich and choice of cupcake.
Menu at the Swallow Cafe
Swallow Cafe definitely has a cafe atmosphere but I think the menu is a cut above. The brunch menu runs through porridge plus; toast with eggs, avocado or grilled fig with goat’s cheese; sandwiches and cooked options which included a good bubble and squeak and bacon with fried egg. £5 to £8 scores you a main course. It’s hearty, good cafe fare. Coffee is OK (£2.60 for a larger cup than average; a Brazil, Kenya, Honduras blend) – and a chocolate and hazelnut brownie that is delicious.
If you’re there on a Friday morning head over the road to Sandwich Box to take home some of their excellent bread.
True to form, today there’s a greeting but no eye contact. I’m going to carry on liking the Swallow Bakery and hopefully one day it will like me back.
Open Monday to Saturday, 08:00 – 18:00 and on Sundays between 09:00 and 17:30
