The Sober Parrot
The Sober Parrot Coffee shop, Cafe and Venue
The Longer Read The Sober Parrot is a new Cheltenham cafe venue with a mission. But don’t worry about that too much.
Based on a quick visit shortly after opening, The Sober Parrot deserves to be a success. First of all, it’s a bright cheerful space. There’s a cafe downstairs and more space upstairs including a small event venue. There’s a small sun-trappy terrace at the front.
It’s too early to review food fairly, but we’ll come back to look into that. Coffee was good though – it’s roasted at Aylesbury Prison, where young offenders are trained in roasting and barista skills.
The menu runs through stuff on toast (eggs, smokey beans, mushrooms, avocado etc). Trad breakfast is (£9.50), Veggie version is £7.50. When I come back to Sober Parrot, I’ll be ordering Potato, Spinach and Parmesan Hash, with poached eggs and tomato salsa (£6).
The Sober Parrot already feels comfortable and homely. It’s a well-designed and relaxing space. That’s the main reason why you should visit, but there’s a terrific back story here too. The Sober Parrot is Cheltenham’s first late night entertainment venue with a strictly alcohol-free offer.
Sober Parrot is a non alcoholic venue, but there are innovative mocktails, using ‘Borrago’. I’ve tried this before and it’s a successful alternative to alcohol in cocktails. The Sober Parrot Signature Mocktail (£6.50) is a Basil Crush – strawberry, basil, cracked pepper, Borrago and tonic. Sounds good to me. There are also dry beers and alcohol-free wines.
The Sober Parrot and the Nelson Trust
Sober Parrot is The Nelson Trust’s Hub Project latest community enterprise, a transformation of the former Number Seven wine bar. The Hub creates space for people to recover from addiction to drugs and alcohol, to help them fulfil their potential. The Hub’s volunteers are people in recovery form addiction and the wider project helps them to gain life skills and experience in a supported environment.
The hospitality industry has long had a serious struggle with antisocial hours, high pressure working environments, and drug and alcohol dependency – it’s entirely fitting that Sober Parrot is part of the solution. Big thumbs up! Please support The Sober Parrot, but there’s no need to do so out of any sense of duty, it’s a good cafe in its own right.
Look forward to seeing what events they line up too.
