Gusto Well Established Cafe on Montpellier Walk
The Longer Read Gusto has been around for a while and is a thoroughly reliable cafe, restaurant and deli on Montpellier Walk, opposite Imperial Gardens. In a smart area of Cheltenham that is sometimes a tad pleased with itself, this cafe is unpretentious, warm and friendly. As soon as you walk in there’s the sense of being in a place where they know what they’re doing.
There are 16 or so seats downstairs, 20+ upstairs and a few seats outside, highly sought after in the summer. Coffee (Illy) is OK, on our visit a flat white had too thin a froth (OK, this sounds like a first world problem, but it really does have an impact on how the coffee tastes). Basically good though.
The lunch menu reads really well – it would be a dull sort who didn’t want to try at least two or three of the dishes on offer. Poached Fruit with Greek Yoghurt, Avocado on Toasted Rye, Breakfast Arancini, Chicken Ramen. Our order of Smoked Salmon on Hash Brown, Avocado, Horseradish, Poached Egg and Hollandaise was a good looking and very tasty dish, with the poached eggs just right.
There have been a lot of cafe openings in Cheltenham recently, Gusto is a reminder that there’s no need to chase after the new all the time. This is food that you really want to eat and the choices reflect everything a good deli menu should be.
