Cafe Bar Reviews – the Neros and the Heroes…

Read on for honest Cheltenham Cafe reviews. Cheltenham has a constantly changing restaurant scene. As a result, this town is a great place to find a new favourite cafe bar or tea room. There are hundreds… but don’t worry, we’ll get round to them all.

Cafe quality here is generally pretty high. There are some great tea options and, most noteworthy, some really good coffee specialists. It seems like the coffee game is being raised everywhere, not least some really exceptional coffee fanatics, who have turned their passion into their business. There are a few dodgy places to avoid though – so have fun, use our guide and explore.

Cafe Bar Reviews

A good cafe bar, tea house or coffee shop remains one of the great pleasures in life. We’re always looking for the best. Along with cafes, we also review a select few of the best Cheltenham pubs and bars (the ones for grown ups, where beer, happiness and conversation rule).

Perhaps unusually, not all the best cafes are in the centre of town. So explore a little, head out to the Bath Road, St Paul’s and Tivoli and you’ll be rewarded with an excellent cafe bar.  Consequently our enthusiasm for the good places shines through.  Cheltenham has form – it was boom time here in the early nineteenth century. At about the time that Cheltenham’s Pittville Pump Room was being built, tea was reaching a height of popularity.  So; cafe culture is long established.  It was usual then for people to take only two main meals a day;  breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening.  Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. Seems like the remedy to that problem was the rather obvious idea of a mid-afternoon snack. This became Afternoon Tea, as we know it.

Cafes & Cafe Opening Hours

We have a marking system for food, drink and atmosphere.  It’s just a personal view, but we’re basically looking for honesty and sincerity, good tea and coffee and decent cakes etc. Simple really – these things are what a good independent cafe is all about.

We usually avoid national chains (just as well;  there are 11 Costas in Cheltenham) mainly because it’s pretty obvious what you’re going to get in such places. Existential boredom mostly. As a result most of our reviews are of independents, but there is the odd exception. And some chains have a south west England bias anyway, so we do make a point of checking out their Cheltenham operation.

When comparing scores, do remember that not all places set out to be great in terms of food. Some are just about the tea and coffee and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Please check opening hours before making a long journey.  There’s a trend for cafes now to open for shorter hours, going from breakfast to early afternoon. That probably makes sense for hard working proprietors and staff in independents. We try and warn you when that’s the case.

Thanks!

Finally, thanks for reading our reviews. In creating this website, we’re trying to build something a little bit different – a thoughtful, considered set of reviews. We’re fed up with gushy bloggy articles written by authors who have rather transparently been given a freebie. So we always pay our way and want to achieve a website that is a handy, entertaining guide to the Cheltenham scene. We love feedback, whether from business owners or customers, so please do get in touch.  In conclusion, you’ll also notice that we’re advertising free, so you can be sure that a favourable review hasn’t popped up in return for advertising income. We’re like an honest concierge, in fact.
